I just got my first brushless eletric RTR SC10 and do I need to calibrate the ESC or Transmitter? Are there any other recommended steps before use? Thanks for your time and helping a newbie!

The SC10 RTR is simple to set up. The only thing you need to buy is 8 AA batteries to power your radio.
The first thing you should do is charge your battery. After your battery is charged, you can then follow the simple set up sheet that comes with your SC10 RTR.
